Indoor Cat Health Concerns

While keeping your cat indoors may provide a safer lifestyle with a significant reduction of infectious diseases and injuries, it doesn’t mean your kitty will never get sick.  Here are just a few diseases don’t stop at your front door.

  • Diabetes and obesity: If your cat is living life as a couch potato, he may be at higher risk for weight gain and diabetes.  Make sure your pet is on a proper diet and provide them physical activities indoors with cat trees, walkways, and designated play time.
  • Dental problems: Plaque, tartar, and tooth decay happen regardless of where your cat lives and can take a toll on their overall health.  Taking her in for a dental check up and working with your veterinarian to develop a dental routine can help.
  • Bladder stones and blockage: Especially a concern in male cats, bladder stones can require surgery and blockage can be fatal.  If you think your cat may be blocked, visit a veterinary ER right away.
  • Arthritis: Cats can develop arthritis just like we do as we age.  Ask your veterinarian about joint supplements and pain management methods.
  • Cancer: Indoor cats are not immune to tumors.  Getting routine physical exams and blood work can help to spot any abnormalities early on.
  • Hyperthyroidism: While there is a wide variety of causes for this disease, older cats seem to be the most affected.
  • Parasites: Fleas, ticks, and mosquitos can all sneak into your home through an open door or window.  Parasite prevention products, like Revolution, are available through your veterinarian.
  • And many more!
